Why might it be prescribed?

Sometimes used for persistent skin or joint manifestations when appropriate.

What makes this medicine different?

Rheumatology treatment is usually taken ONCE WEEKLY, not daily, and its typical role differs from medicines for active lupus kidney disease.

How it works: analogy and explanation
Picture the same factory producing immune defenders. Methotrexate slows several processes and inflammatory signals, but not in exactly the same way as azathioprine or mycophenolate.

It changes several cellular and inflammatory pathways at rheumatology doses.

The analogy is a learning aid, not a literal description of biology.

How is it used and when may it help?

Response may take several weeks. Follow the prescribed weekly day and any folic-acid plan.

If you miss a dose, follow the instructions for your specific product or ask your pharmacist. Do not double up without explicit advice.

Side effects and monitoring

Nausea, mouth sores and fatigue are possible; liver, blood-cell and lung complications can occur.

Never convert weekly dosing to daily use. Regular blood, liver and kidney tests are needed; discuss pregnancy planning.

Which medicines may interact?

Trimethoprim and co-trimoxazole can dangerously suppress blood cells in combination; usually avoid. Ask before adding OTC painkillers or acid medicines.

These are important examples, not a complete interaction list. Some combinations are intentional with monitoring; others may need avoidance. Bring your complete medicine list to your appointments.

Pregnancy, breastfeeding and family planning

Can cause serious fetal harm. The specialist should guide stopping intervals and pregnancy planning.

When to get prompt or urgent medical help

If you accidentally take a weekly dose daily, seek urgent medical help even if you feel well. Report major mouth sores, fever or breathing problems promptly.

How does it compare with other medicines?
Azathioprine does not follow the same weekly schedule; mycophenolate has a different pathway and is used often for lupus nephritis.

Teach-back: explain in your own words

Think through your answer before expanding the review notes. Nothing is recorded or sent.

A label says methotrexate every Friday, but you read 'every day.' How do you check before taking it?
