How it works: analogy and explanation
It reduces prostaglandins, chemicals involved in pain, fever and inflammation.
The analogy is a learning aid, not a literal description of biology.
How is it used and when may it help?
Pain relief may start within hours. Follow the prescribed or recommended limits and avoid combining NSAIDs.
If you miss a dose, follow the instructions for your specific product or ask your pharmacist. Do not double up without explicit advice.
Side effects and monitoring
Heartburn, stomach pain or nausea may occur; blood pressure, fluid retention and kidney function may worsen.
Kidney disease, stomach ulcers, heart conditions and use of blood thinners require extra caution.
Which medicines may interact?
Risk of stomach bleeding increases with prednisone or blood thinners. Do not combine ibuprofen with naproxen without medical advice.
These are important examples, not a complete interaction list. Some combinations are intentional with monitoring; others may need avoidance. Bring your complete medicine list to your appointments.
Pregnancy, breastfeeding and family planning
NSAIDs can be harmful during pregnancy, especially later in gestation. Check with the obstetric team.
When to get prompt or urgent medical help
Seek urgent care for black stools, vomiting blood, markedly reduced urine or new chest pain or breathlessness.
How does it compare with other medicines?
